PGA co-leaders confident of winning formula
Viktor Hovland says he has the "tools" towin his first major title, Corey Conners has confidence from an April triumphand Scottie Scheffler has already won a major.
That's why each of the co-leaders after Friday'ssecond round of the PGA Championship figures he has a good chance to lift atrophy Sunday at Oak Hill.
World number two Scheffler, last year's Masterschampion, and Canada's Conners fired two-under-par 68s while Norway's11th-ranked Hovland closed with a birdie to shoot 67 and match them for the36-hole lead on five-under 135.
"I find myself comfortable in thesesituations. These are the positions I want to be in. I want to be near thelead," Scheffler said.
"I'm excited to be in a good position goinginto the weekend. With that being said, I'm going to keep my head down and keepdoing what I'm doing."
Conners captured his second PGA Tour title at lastmonth's Texas Open and contended at the Masters from 2020 to 2022 beforesettling for top-10 results.
"Just getting experience in the situation ishelpful," Conners said of the trophy fight.
"Winning in Texas alittle over a month ago, take a lot from that. Lots of confidence in my game.Feel good and having fun out there."
Hovland feels he is ready for a major breakthroughafter sharing fourth in last year's British Open and seventh last month at theMasters.
"I believe I have all the tools in the bag. Ijust have to go out there and execute," Hovland said.
"The ball-striking is definitely there.Putting, anything can happen, and I feel like a lot of the short game work thatI've been doing the last couple of months are starting to show a littlebit."
Wisdom from experience is also in Hovland's toolkit.
"I haven't done great in the majors that I'veplayed before. I've had some nice top-15 finishes and stuff like that, but Ihaven't quite been in contention," he said.
"I think that has been because I've just beena little bit young and stupid, just going after some pins that I'm not supposedto go for even though I'm feeling good about my ball striking.
"Then you make bogey or double and you justcan't do that in major championship golf. You just have to wear out centre ofthe green. If that putter gets hot, you can make some birdies."
Scheffler has much the same idea, be smart and stayclose to the top.
"When you can kind of hang around the lead andstay in position and hopefully wait to get hot, it's a good position to bein," Scheffler said.
"I'm hoping to hit a few more fairways, make ita little easier on myself, but ultimately, 2-under is a good round around thisplace."
'One swing away'
Scheffler said it's difficult to keep a positiveattitude after a poor hole.
"It's very challenging, but I feel like on agolf course like this, I'm one swing away from getting everything backtogether," he said.
"You get rewarded for good shots out here andif you execute, you can birdie pretty much any hole."
Hovland will try to keep his focus even with adream goal so near his grasp.
"These tournaments are what you dream aboutwinning and you practice so hard to play in," he said.
"It'sexciting, but you have to focus on every single shot you're hitting."

Cole's double-bogey hands DeChambeau PGA lead
A double-bogey for US rookie Eric Cole on Friday morning left Bryson DeChambeau as leader of the PGA Championship after the completion of the opening round.
When darkness halted play Thursday at Oak Hill, Cole was on 5-under one shot better off than clubhouse leader DeChambeau, but plunked his first shot Friday into a creek on the way to a double bogey at the par-4 sixth hole.
World number 122 Cole, a back-nine starter, then missed a birdie putt from just inside six feet at the seventh, made a six-foot par putt at the eighth and parred the ninth to share second place after 18 holes.
DeChambeau, the 2020 US Open champion, fired a four-under par 66 on Thursday to seize the lead with fellow LIV Golf star Dustin Johnson, Canada's Corey Conners, Cole and Scottie Scheffler one adrift on 67.
A frost delay of one hour and 50 minutes on Thursday prevented the first round from finishing before sunset, leaving 30 players to return Friday before their second rounds.Only 16 players went under par in the opening round.
Cole, who missed the cut at the 2021 US Open in his only prior major, made the field of 156 as an alternate when already-qualified Jason Day won last week's PGA Tour event.
After marking in the sixth fairway Thursday, Cole's first shot Friday found a creek and he missed a 12-foot bogey putt to fall behind DeChambeau.
Cole, who lost a playoff at the PGA Honda Classic in February, sank an 11-foot birdie putt Thursday at the 12th, rebounded from a bogey at the par-5 13th with birdies at 14 and 15 and took the lead with three birdies in a row.
He made an 11-foot birdie putt at the par-4 second, a 13-footer at the par-3 third and put his approach inside four feet from the left rough at the par-5 fourth to set up another birdie.
The 34-year-old American is the son of two former golf professionals - South African Bobby Cole, third in the 1974 PGA Championship, and Laura Baugh, an American who played 25 LPGA seasons.
DJ, Scott out early
Johnson, a two-time major winner, and Australian Adam Scott, who opened with a 68, were among those hoping to make a morning charge in the second round.
DeChambeau and Johnson were two of the big names lured from the PGA Tour by Saudi-backed LIV Golf, with record $25 million purses but amid criticism over Saudi Arabian human rights issues.
The PGA Tour banned LIV players and a court fight between the tours is set for trial next May.
Until then, majors are the only venues where the best of LIV and the PGA can compete.
Several top stars struggled in their opening rounds Thursday, with world number one Jon Rahm, the reigning Masters champion, and US Open champion Matthew Fitzpatrick both recording a 76.
Jordan Spieth, a three-time major winner trying to complete a career Grand Slam by winning this week, opened on 73.
The American is battling a left wrist injury.
Phil Mickelson, a six-time major winner, finished Friday on 73 while fellow LIV standout Cameron Smith, the reigning British Open champion, was on 72.
Four-time major winner Rory McIlroy, chasing his first major victory since 2014, opened on 71.

Leaner DeChambeau still brings power to lead at PGA
Bryson DeChambeau, once a bulked-up ball basher who prized distance over all else, has slimmed down, found more energy and taken the PGA Championship lead with his trademark powerful drives.
The 29-year-old American fired a four-under par 66 to grab the early first-round clubhouse lead Thursday at Oak Hill with six birdies against a pair of bogeys.
"It was a fantastic round," he said. "I was able to play some really good golf, hit a lot of fairways, did my job and made some putts."
DeChambeau seemed to have rewritten the plot of golf when he won the 2020 US Open with a huge muscular frame and determination to drive deep no matter where a ball landed.
His ideas on nutrition and body basics, however, led to vertigo and discovering that his body was inflamed by his packing on pounds.
So DeChambeau has worked to lose weight, eat better and keep the energy that produces long drives. While his edge might not be the maximum possible, it's one he can sustain without bad side effects.
"The emotions have definitely fluctuated pretty high and pretty low, thinking I have something and it fails and going back and forth," DeChambeau said.
"It's humbling. Golf, and life, always has a good way of kicking you on your you know what when you are on your high horse. It's nice to feel this today."
DeChambeau ranked third in driving distance at 313.3 yards and sixth in accuracy by finding nine of 14 fairways.
He led the field with 2.7 strokes gained off the tee.
Once a muscular powerhouse, now he's fit and no longer experimenting to unlock extra power.
"A lot of diet changes, going to 5 000 calories down to 2 900," he said.
"But eating properly instead of eating stuff that inflames my body.
"It has helped me have more energy, first and foremost."
His muscles might not be as huge, but they can still react fast enough to deliver a long drive."
Long drive is more fast twitch than anything. You have to build a muscle system that can support it. I have it now, and it's fantastic."
DeChambeau found his blood would be inflamed because he was allergic to corn, wheat, gluten and dairy.
"Pretty much everything I liked, I couldn't eat," he said. "Started taking it out in August and over the course of time I've lost all this inflammation, lost a lot of fat and slimmed down like crazy. I lost 18 pounds in 24 days."
DeChambeau also recovered from a left wrist injury.
"Nice to come back and start to finally figure out what's going on with my golf swing," he said.
"I've had to figure out what I did so well in 2018 and what made me so successful then.
"I feel like I'm catching on and trending that direction. Figured out a couple things this week, and it certainly paid off today."
No more changes
No more experimenting, however, for a player once nicknamed the scientist.
The lab is closed.
"I want to be just stable now," he said. "I'm tired of changing, trying different things. Could I hit it a little further? could I try and get a little stronger? Sure. But I'm not going to go full force.
"It was great. I can hit my 8-iron 200 yards now, whereas before it was 175, 170. So it's a tremendous asset.
"It was a fun experiment, but [I] definitely want to play some good golf now."

Start set after PGA Championship delayed by frost
Practice facilities opened at Oak Hill after frost on Thursday delayed the start of the 105th PGA Championship by one hour and 50 minutes.
PGA of America officials said Shaun Micheel, the American who won a shock PGA crown at Oak Hill in 2003, is now set to strike the opening tee shot at 15:50 SA time.
Fog and frost greeted the players and led to the shutting down of all practice areas and the course.
World number one Jon Rahm of Spain, the Masters champion, was set for a revised start time of 10:23 a.m. off the 10th tee alongside US Open champion Matthew Fitzpatrick of England and Australia's British Open champion Cameron Smith.
Cold conditions were expected to give way to rain throughout the weekend at the event, which had initially been due to take place in August before the PGA of America shifted it to its current dates.
