MY ONLY STORY: BACK TO SCHOOL

It started with a random scrap of paper, which led to a story of tragic heroes, colourful villains and a teenage boy's violent - and possibly avoidable - death.

In 2018, a 16-year-old boy died in St Andrew's College clinic in Makhanda.

According to the school, his death remains a mystery - but new evidence shows that there could be more to the story.

In the new season of My Only Story: Back to School, Johannesburg writer Deon Wiggett wades through cryptic text messages, treks through a dozen South African schools, and unearths a ring of vicious teachers across the country who prey on the children in their care.

THE INGE LOTZ STORY: A MISCARRIAGE OF JUSTICE

Inge Lotz, a Stellenbosch University student, was murdered in her apartment in 2005. She was 22 years old, cut down in the prime of her life.

Investigators believed somebody close to her had killed her because of the excessive force used in her murder. Police immediately zoned in on her boyfriend, Fred van der Vyver. Three months later, he was arrested for the crime, but vehemently denied any involvement.

In this six-part podcast series, producers Matthew Brown and Catherine Rice meet an FBI expert, a painting forgery sleuth, and uncover a shocking confession.

They explore what happened on that hot and humid day in March 2005. Brown and Rice sift through the complexities of the case in a bid to separate fact from fiction.

EXODUS

KwaSizabantu, a more than 50-year old Christian mission in KwaZulu-Natal, has found itself at the core of accusations relating to gross human rights violations.

Former members of the congregation have come forward with testimonies accusing the mission of covering up sexual abuse and money laundering.

In Exodus, a four-part podcast series, we lift the curtain on the mission by following Erika Bornman and Celimpilio Malinga who both moved to KwaSizabantu at the height of apartheid.

Exodus is also available on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.

MISSING MATTHEW

It was 23 years ago that Michelle Ohlsson was last able to tuck her son into bed, kiss him goodnight, read him a bedtime story or say goodbye to him at his school gate. It's been 23 years of not knowing - not knowing if her son is dead or alive and not knowing what happened on the day he disappeared.

In this podcast series, we delve into the disappearance of nine-year-old Matthew Ohlsson, who vanished outside his Mitchells Plain home on 24 March 1997.

His parents have not stopped searching for him and claim police have not done enough to help them find out what happened to him. This cold case has baffled police officers and private investigators.

If Matthew was alive, he would be 32 years old.

JUSTICE DENIED

In March 2019, News24 launched its first narrative podcast series called Justice Denied.

It was a four-part series that told the stories of four people who were wrongfully convicted.

The goal of the series was to show the fallibility of the judicial system and the devastating ramifications judicial mistakes can have on people's lives.

Over a period of four months, two journalists interviewed more than 20 people across four provinces, culminating in almost two hours of audio storytelling.

The episodes resonated with both News24's audience and peers and very often landed on our most-read lists. In 2020, the series won a Silver Bookmark Award in the Podcast and Audio Streaming category.

MY ONLY STORY

In November 2019, News24 partnered with Johannesburg-based advertising copywriter Deon Wiggett to co-publish his serialised podcast, My Only Story.

In the podcast Wiggett exposes Willem Breytenbach, a former Media24 executive, teacher and digital entrepreneur, as an alleged sexual predator.

In April 2020, Wiggett's My Only Story won bronze in the Best Serialised Podcast category at the New York Festivals Radio Awards. The awards honour radio content in all lengths and formats and across all platforms from radio stations, networks and independent producers from around the globe.

Breytenbach is currently facing charges of sexual assault and indecent assault.
