Dr Jannie Naudé of TAH Table View replies:Some animals cope with winter just fine, but others are a lot more sensitive. The good news? With a few simple steps, you can keep your furry friend warm, comfy and healthy all season long:
• Cold weather can make existing issues such as arthritis and joint pain worse – especially when it comes to older dogs and cats. You might notice that your pet is moving a bit stiffly or struggling to get up.
A warm, cosy bed away from draughts can make a world of difference. In some cases, your vet might also suggest supplements or medication.
• Smaller breeds, short-haired pets and very young or older animals tend to feel the cold more. A snug jacket goes a long way in the outdoors. Even then, try to limit their time in very cold conditions – especially early in the morning or late at night.
• Food matters, too. Pets that spend a lot of time outdoors may need a bit more food to maintain their body temperature, while indoor pets can easily gain weight if they’re less active. So, it’s a good idea to adjust their portions and keep an eye on their condition. And don’t forget about water – pets often drink less in winter, so make sure fresh water is always available and that outdoor bowls don’t freeze.
• Also, fleas and ticks don’t disappear completely in winter. Regular parasite control is still important.
• Lastly, don’t underestimate the power of attention and companionship. Pets tend to spend more time indoors during winter, and changes in routine can affect them. Regular interaction and a bit of light exercise will go a long way in keeping them happy and healthy.
If you’re unsure about your pet’s health this winter, check in with your vet.
