Kevin Barnes of Sedgefield writes When I was a child, growing up in Kimberley, my siblings and I would get the call that Ouma and Oupa were on their way to visit us.

We would start cleaning and preparing like we were Buckingham Palace staff. Then the wait began: We'd sit on the pavement and gaze into the distance, waiting for the appearance of Oupa's Opel Kadett.

We called this behaviour "pavement syndrome".

I would say that this spotted hyena suffers from the same syndrome! I'm not sure what he's waiting for, but I suspect it might be his mother bringing food. I took the photo next to the H6 near the N'wanetsi picnic site in the Kruger Park.
