Pierre Rossouw from Bellville writes My friend Johann Jooste and I spent 12 days in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in February this year. One morning, we drove south from Nossob and pulled over to take photos of this Cape cobra near the Dikbaardskolk waterhole.

A small leopard tortoise crossed the road and the snake immediately went over to investigate. After many attempts, the snake picked the tortoise up and disappeared into the veld with it.

Snake expert Johan Marais says: Cape cobras usually hunt rodents, birds, other snakes, lizards and toads - they especially like to raid sociable weaver nests in trees.

There have been a few recorded cases of Cape cobras (as well as snouted cobras and monitor lizards) eating small tortoises. The tortoises are swallowed whole and digested.
