Philna de Villiers of Villiersdorp writes A woodland kingfisher arrived on our farm Jonkersrivier in the Breede Valley in January 2021.

Apparently, it was only the second time this species had been recorded in the Western Cape.

More than a hundred birders "flocked" to our farm and it was so much fun to share in their excitement.

As Trevor Hardaker said in the Southern African Rare Bird News Report: "What is even more interesting is that this latest bird does not appear to be of the race cyanoleuca, which is the race that we normally get in southern Africa as it lacks the black wedge behind the eye.

"It seems to be of the nominate race senegalensis, which is perhaps an even more significant record in a local context as it would point to a bird from much further north in Africa that has really overshot its migration quite significantly."
