Here in Cape Town, walking on the promenade in Sea Point is athing - in the early morning or late afternoon, people and theirpooches promenade (yep, it's a verb too) along the windingwalkways of Sea Point, Three Anchor Bay and Mouille Point, anexuberance of sociable togetherness.
There are many strange sights to behold when you walk onthe promenade. To me, the funniest is a slender blonde man Ioften see jogging - in flat Bible-times sandals strapped aroundhis calves. It looks painfully uncomfortable, yet his face is apicture of happiness. It reminds me of how Zola Budd stunnedthe world in the 1980s as a barefoot champion in the 5 000mrace. Perhaps the happy jogger is the Zola Budd of 2021 buthe's worried about getting thorns in his feet, hence the gladiatorsandals? One day, a man in a pair of high heels glided past meat a pace that would have had many a ramp model hanging theirheads in shame. But each to their own, as the saying goes.
I feel the same about kitchens. The manner in which youequip it and the style you choose is like promenading in Sea Point. You can choose to wear sandals or high heels in this multipurposespace - and that's just for starters. Little wonder then that our kitchenissue is so popular every year, because when the discussion turns tokitchens, opinions are strong and diverse. But it's always a lovely, insightful conversation.
I've always preferred a classic kitchen. But when I look at the farm-style kitchens thereafter, they stirsomething inside me, and then I wonder again about my own pure whitekitchen and whether I shouldn't have gone for something more rustic. The two black kitchens are beautiful too - we included these because I'vebeen getting more and more enquiries from readers about this versatileneutral colour. And just look how gorgeous it is when you combine blackunits with raw wood as Alta Moggee has done in her kitchen.
I plan to redo many more kitchens in my life because I still have lots of"shoes in my closet", so to speak. As long as the space works well and Ienjoy cooking in it. As expert Debbie Luke puts it in our feature article:functionality first!
