Age polystyrene tiles with paint, candle wax and sandpaper or steel wool.

Here's how...

1. Polystyrene ceiling tiles are available at hardware stores and look just like the real thing. To weather them, paint them in dark grey water-based paint and leave to dry.

2. Apply craft paint in rust or hammered metal colours to the raised parts of the tiles. Allow to dry completely.

3. Rub a piece of candle here and there over the raised parts. Take care not to damage the polystyrene, but also make sure you rub a reasonable amount of wax onto the tiles.

4. Apply a coat of white water-based paint over the tiles - also paint in the grooves between the raised areas.

5. When the paint is just dry, rub a piece of steel wool over the sections where you applied the candle wax so the paint comes off in these areas. Be careful not to damage the polystyrene. Stick your completed tiles onto the ceiling, or use them as a headboard or against a cupboard or wall.

You can apply this technique to wooden furniture using wax too.
