One in six couples is impacted by infertility, according to the Infertility Awareness Association of South Africa (IFAASA). Infertility occurs in both men and women, and there are several risk factors: occupational and environmental risks, age, smoking and alcohol use. One of the most common causes of infertility in women is Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).
An estimated 8-13% of women suffer from PCOS. This involves reproductive, cosmetic and metabolic side effects. The long-term effects, if not diagnosed and treated early, are infertility due to ovarian dysfunction, an increased risk of developing diabetes, cardiac issues linked to hypertension, sleeping problems and high cholesterol.
Common symptoms and diagnosis
Symptoms of PCOS include irregular or prolonged menstrual cycles and elevated levels of the male hormone androgen (also known as hyperandrogenism). Due to these hormonal imbalances, women living with PCOS often battle with acne, irregular periods, male pattern hair loss or experience excessive body hair growth (hirsutism). It can also result in the ovaries not functioning properly.
Getting a diagnosis from a healthcare practitioner is key to effectively managing PCOS. The onset of PCOS can start as young as 14 or 15 years old, and if left undiagnosed and untreated for years, it can cause further health complications down the line, including possible infertility.
Parents are encouraged to talk to their daughters about what could be considered ‘normal' and ‘abnormal' periods. Just by having these conversations, we can normalise these common women's health conditions and debunk the myths and the unfortunate stigma attached to them.
What is Salome?
The Salome range was developed by local pharmaceutical company 3Sixty Biomedicine to meet the needs of those looking for natural alternatives to treat common female health conditions.
The company offers two products for women with PCOS - Salome Polycos, containing 600mg of D-chiro-inositol (DCI), and Salome Fertility, which contains a patented ratio of DCI and Myo-inositol. Both DCI and Myo-inositol are natural extracts obtained from the carob tree. According to 3Sixty Biomedicine, clinical studies have shown that DCI and Myo-inositol can help in the management of PCOS symptoms.
Who can use these products?
Due to the herbal extracts and use of natural ingredients in the products, the Salome range has minimal side effects and certain medical aids will reimburse its costs.
These products are available online here, on Takealot or can be purchased over the counter at leading pharmacies nationwide.
